BIG NEWS

Developers unveil new plans and renderings for Coney Island casino

The developers of a proposed Coney Island casino have revealed updated plans and new renderings for the facility, which they hope to build amid a complex featuring a 500-room hotel, a 2,500-seat concert venue, high-end restaurants, 90,000 square feet of meeting and event space, and a public green area. The project, dubbed "The Coney," is a collaboration among Saratoga Casino Holdings, Global Gaming Solutions, Legends, and Thor Equities. These partners have been pursuing the idea since a new downstate casino license became available in 2022. To move forward, they must first gain approval from the New York Gaming Facility Location Board and gather feedback from Coney Island residents, who have shown mixed reactions to the $3 billion proposal.

Sam Gerrity, CEO of Saratoga Casino Holdings, emphasizes that "The Coney" could significantly boost the local economy, providing year-round jobs and enhancing the infrastructure of the bustling area. The development is expected to create around 4,000 new jobs, catering to both locals and tourists. However, despite a petition supporting the project with 10,000 signatures, there is notable opposition from some residents and local leaders, who fear the negative impacts of a casino. To address these concerns, the developers promise measures like an on-site resource center for gaming addiction prevention and thorough staff training to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all visitors.
